Why is it safer to buy generic drugs?

My doctor has posters up and pamphlets about how it's safer to buy generic drugs than brand-name, but I don't understand. Isn't it the big drug companies that do the research on how healthy their drugs are, not the stores? If the stores that sell the generic brand don't do the research, why are those drugs safer?
Answer:
Generic drug companies are held to the same stringent regulations and guidelines and practices that all drug companies are held to. The only difference the generic company did not develop the drug and copyright the name. A generic company can not sell a drug until the patent of the drug has expired. Clariton made by Schering Plough contains the active drug Loratadine. Generic Clariton also contains the same active pharmaceutical ingredient Loratadine. They can not call the product Clariton since the name is copyrighted, they call it Loratadine, but the active has to have the same exact potency and purity as the Clariton made by Schering Plough.Generic drugs are as safe as the retail drug, because the testing, and specification are exactly the same and these are stringently reviewed by the FDA. Also note that many manufactures do not even make their own drugs anymore and often they are made by contract companies or other entities and are only marketed by the big pharm companies.
It's not safer. Just cheaper. Same exact drug for a fraction of the price.
It isn't safER. It's SAFE to buy generic drugs. In other word, they meet the same federal guidlines (as far a purity and content and consistancy) as the non-generic that you had previousy taken.
They are not safer, just cheaper. If you check the label of say...um...generic Nyquil, it has the exact same ingredients. The research is done by the big drug company for generic company. The brand company is hoping you'll pay for their pretty packaging.
It is ludicrous that your doc says it is safer, generics are simply
CHEAPER.. Brand names are more expensive. Research is done by all companies. The difference iss in the $$$$$$$$.
Smiles to you and good luck.
It is truly amazing that you would NOT have asked a member of the staff at your Doctor's office the question that you are asking US !You were right there in the office with the signs. If you had pointed to one of the signs and asked the nurse, clerk, secretary or even the doctor himself, wouldn't we NOW have the answer instead of the question? We would all like to know WHY the doctor said SAFER.Now we will never know unless you go back and ask somebody!
