Why does to it take anti-depressant meds 2 weeks to start working?

Most meds start working within one hr after taking it. Why is it that I feel the side effects from an SSRI after an hour but dont get relief until a few weeks? Im looking for a scientific/biological explanation if possible.
Answer:
Hello,
I can't give a scientific explanation, but basically the meds need to build up in your bloodstream before they start having a effect. This may be a bad analogy, but if you take a stimulant, it affects you pretty much immediately, but wears off. Antidepressants work slowly, but they don't wear off as quickly. I'm not a doctor--don't quote me--but I am on antidepressants myself and that is how it was explained to me. I hope you get relief soon--it took me about six weeks before I started feeling better.
They may just be " dummy " Pills.. Go take a nice brisk walk and you will get instant relief.. I know this sounds crazy but it really work. If you are very stressed and depressed you may want to take a couple walks each day. they don't have to be long but brisk.
Because it takes anti depressants awhile to get to know your receptors in your brain and how much of the meds will work for just your chemical makeup. I know, it's a ***** waiting but it will pay off.. Do some counseling so you don't have to stay on Paxil for 12 years like I have. Good luck dude! :0 ) Also the build up in your bloodstream is also why as the person above me said. Most true Look it up in PDR.com
There is this thing called the blood brain barrier. It is an anatomical arrangement meant to protect the brain from junk floating around in the blood. Molecule size also matters. Larger molecule have a tougher time crossing the barrier and so they take longer to reach medicinal levels in the brain.
dont use anti - depressants.
solution is in your brain.
When you think I need anti - depressant It means that your brain begin to solve that problem. let it to solve.Being in anger also normal for us.
