Why is it necessayr to control the activities of the digestive system?

Answer:
It is necessary to control the activities of the digestive system during times when the body needs to respond to a fight or flight situation because the sympathetic nervous system stops digestive activities to conserve that energy for muscle action for example.
While it is necessary to control the digestive system in "fight or flight" times, other control measures are taken. When we ingest bacteria that is harmful to our body, we vomit and/or have loose bowel movements (when you have 4 or more loose bowel movements in 12 hours, then you have diarrhea) to get rid of the harmful bacteria. That is why you need to know the signs and symptoms that go along with diarrhea before given anti-diarrheals.Another control is nutrient uptake. When blood levels get low of many different nutrients, hormones are released to signal the intestines to absorb more of the nutrient.A safety control is the emptying of chyme into the duodenum. If the stomach contents all went into the small intestines at once, then the acid/base buffer system would be overloaded and the stomach acids would destroy the duodenum.THere are many different control mechanisms for the digestive system and these are just a few.
